What is a Distro?

A distro (short for distribution) is a modification of a free operating system. It usually refers to Linux, but can also mean BSD, or another Unix-like OS. There are many different distros, but none are considered the "official". All of them are based on the Linux kernel, but some are based on other distros. CPX-Mini, for example, is based on Kantonix, which is based on Knoppix, which is based on Debian, which is based on the Linux kernel. Since Linux is free, one can edit a distro to make there own. This site was created to inform people about distros, and other Open Source projects.
